Elias Vermeer had a turbulent childhood. He lost his father at a young age, leaving him alone with his mother. She was an intelligent and curious woman with a deep love for old maps and forgotten stories. As a child, she had dreamed of exploring the world, but her parents believed there was no future in a life of adventure. When his mother also passed away, Elias’s world collapsed. With no family left, he was placed in an orphanage. Those were difficult years.
